Instagram launches Reels
Reels could be considered a direct response to the growing popularity of TikTok — which has surged in popularity over the last 12 months.
TikTok generated “the most downloads for any app ever in a quarter” in Q1 2020, according to Adweek. And TikTok’s core demographic is rapidly changing. While once dominated by Gen-Z users, Millennials now make up a greater share of TikTok’s user base than ever before — making the platform a much more attractive proposition for advertisers.
With TikTok’s ban in India, the introduction of Instagram Reels is a welcome feature everyone is looking forward to using and some have even started using. Hence, here’s a quite guide as to how you can make, watch, save Instagram Reels so that you don’t miss TikTok.
How to create a video with Instagram Reels?
Due to the introduction of the Instagram Reels, the Instagram Stories section has seen a design overhaul and is now a bit cleaner and simpler.
Instagram Reels is a new mode in the Instagram Stories camera menu, positioned either between the default Normal mode and Create mode or on the bottom menu next to “Story”.
From this screen, you can select your audio by tapping the music icon:
Choose the speed of your video by pressing the play icon:
Choose how long your clips will be by selecting the stopwatch icon. When you set a timer, there’s a countdown before the recording starts. Similar to Boomerang mode, you can scroll across to apply effects or AR filters to your Instagram Reels video. You can choose to use any previously saved filters or you can scroll to the end and tap “Browse Effects”. And hold down the record button to capture footage:
Much like on TikTok, you can start and stop recording multiple times during your 15-second video by pressing and holding the record button. Once you’re happy with the result, you can edit the cover photo with a video thumbnail or add a cover from your camera roll. Then, you can save it as a draft, send it to friends, share it to stories, or add it to your Instagram profile.
Check out the latest Instagram Reels tab on Instagram profiles — this is where you will find your videos and drafts and where your followers will find your published videos.
How to watch Instagram Reels on Android, iOS?
- Scroll through your feed to see any Reels. Much like IGTV posts have the IGTV icon, Reels posts too get the Reels icon
